Technical Terms

Learn how they communicate in construction site. I’ve listed some terminologies that are often used in construction sites and in carpentry.


Level: a line or a horizontal plane with reference to the distance above or below a given point or in reference with the sea level. It is related to the word elevation which means a geographic location is its height below or above reference point.

Plumb: The term “plumb” refers to a line that is vertical or perfectly perpendicular to the sea level. It is an imaginary line that runs straight to the center of the earth.
Perpendicular: a straight line at an angle of 90° to a given line, plane, or surface.

In the figure 2, lets consider two lines. Line CD and line AB. The line AB is perpendicular to line CD.

Figure 3 is the plumb bob. One of the most common tool used to check the vertical lines in construction and in carpentry.
